OUR ANIMALS

WELCOME TO OUR SANCTUARY!

Meet our friends.

Here, you can get to know some of the amazing animals that call our sanctuary home. Each one has a unique story and a special place in our hearts. Please take a moment to learn about their individual journeys and the incredible personalities that make our sanctuary so special.

We currently have over 30 llamas and alpaca Residents living at Safe Haven.
Enjoy some wonderful photos from our kind crew!

Please understand these llamas and alpacas are NOT adoptable due to extensive vet care needs. Most of our residents will remain at Safe Haven for the remainder of their lives, as they have special needs or are too old to relocate.

Let us know if you would like to learn more about any of these animals and remember, you can easily donate to help us care for each and every single one.

Pria

  • Little Pria (Formally Curley) is Our Little Lady. She is THE tiniest and most frail little girl. She was surrendered to Safe Haven in Mid 2021. Since arriving at at the Sanctuary she has made friends with the other alpacas and LOVES to hang at the hay. She also LOVES the sunshine. Pria is about 8 years old.

Encotata

  • We have never met a more kind, gentle soul than Encontana. She is pure joy.

Bred into the fiber category, she has inherited being broken down in her pasterns at an early age.  Encontata is around 20 years old but enjoys the sunshine and hanging in the pasture with the ladies. Her favorite part of the day is "treat time"!

  • Encotata - By Char

In 2007, we moved to a ranch

Star Sapphire, just on the hill

We were there just a short time

When here come this beautiful llama  girl.

She had a special name, Encontata

And with a cute cria by her side

What a great momma she was

This girl has so much pride.

    Encontata is a soft white

    Silky fiber that shines

    It matches her personality

A girl so sweet and kind.

    Encontata is just so gentle

     She's very quiet as well

Never does she get shook up

Or even lets out a yell.

    Just taking her time

Her walk is gentle and slow

    There's never no big hurry

She's not a girl on the go.

    She's our PR Girl

    When visitors come

    They get to admire her

    She doesn't care to run.

They get to touch her beautiful locks

As soft and white as snow

Then her feet get checked out

As Char shows visitors a toe.

She is getting on in years

We hope to have her a lot longer

    We do all we can

    Just to keep her stronger.

    We love you Encontata

    In the pasture your admired

As you cush on nice green grass

    SOmetimes you just look tired.

    Your age is now 20

You been with us 15 years

When your time comes to leave us

It will bring us lots of tears.

    Until then  you'll receive

All the best of care I give

I like seeing you in my pasture

It's also at where I live.

    Nothing like getting

To share my life with you

    There's nothing in this  world

    That I would rather do.

Bryley

  • Miss Bryley Belle is going to be 24 years old in a few months. She is doing well and loves her fruits, vegetables, pellets, and even attention. She was one of the sanctuary's original llamas and I am so overjoyed that she is back where she belongs. This Montana gal is such a gem.

Sentiya

  • Sentiya came to us in the Fall of 2023 as part of the feral 9. We are working on building trust and relationship with her. Recently she was haltered for the first time which means she can now receive necessary veterinary care. What a beauty this girl is!

Dolly & Lolly

  • Dolly (left) and Lolly (right) are some of our newest residents. They are beauties!

Dolly is a kind soul who integrates well with the herd. Her honey-brown fiber is gorgeous!

Lolly likes to be the queen of the herd and can sometimes overpower her affection towards you; adorable - but sassy. This is part of being partially imprinted on as a cria. .

Gunner

  • Gunner is a nosy lad who enjoys hanging with the bunnies.

He is a VERY curious soul and has to greet every visitor who comes to Safe Haven. Gunner has been a resident for a few years. He is a kind alpaca who makes the world a better place just by being alive. Come on over and meet this handsome guy.

(San) Tiago

  • Meet Gunners brother. Currently Tiago is going through some daily vet maintenance on his jaw. He had bone fragments broken in his jaw which are caused by possibly being kicked by another llama. They were removed but it has not healed and after a year is still abscessing. Surgery may be needed soon.

He is a strong-willed fellow who arrived at Safe Haven in early 2020.
Please consider donating to his daily vet care. We need assistance in buying medicine, needles, and surgery costs.

Dannalee

  • Say Hello To Dannalee.

This inquisitive lady is acting Vice President of the feral herd that came to the sanctuary Fall of 2023. Danalee is around 12 years old.

She is learning to trust humans and getting better on a lead. She was successfully sheared for the first time in her life this Spring of 2024 without incident. She is one of the tallest gals at the sanctuary. Shes such a knoble beautiful creature!

Fiona

  • Fiona arrived at Safe Haven in the Fall of 2023 with seven other feral llamas. She is learning to trust humans.

Fiona is a kind old soul. She came to us with an old injury in her neck, eye ulcers, and a bacterial skin condition. She has gone through extensive vet care and is healing but she will never be 100%.

Her vet care costs are exorbitant.

Safe Haven needs assistance in paying for her needs. Please Click Here to help pay for Fiolas vet bills and aftercare.

Talia

  • Gorgeous Talia.

Fiona arrived at Safe Haven in the Fall of 2023 with seven other feral llamas. One of which is her mother Fiona. Talia is a true beauty and has learned to trust humans. She leads well and is such a joy to know.

Mo

  • Mo is a bigger alpaca and came to the sanctuary in 2021. Mo has the sweetest temperament and has a chin wattle that hangs from his lower left chin and makes him even more endearing. He is one of Safe Haven's PR animals and eagerly welcomes all who visit. Anyone who meets Mo leaves with a smile. He's a resident favorite! Call to schedule a visit and meet Mo!

  • Mo-huacaya alpaca - By Char

Mo is such a special alpaca

He arrived here three years ago

We think he originally was from Missoula

     But we just don't know.

A gal from a place called "Conner"

    Contacted CHar by phone

    She wanted information on alpacas

    Info that was not known.

    Several months went by

Then she had gotten Priya and Mo

I recommended Dr. Rolette Pruyn of Blue Mtn Vet

For vet care he is the pro.

    Life brings things upon us

Her mom was very ill, she had to go

I received the hardest phone call

In tears she asked if Safe Haven would take Priya and Mo.

Hubby and I headed to Conner

Even though she was no longer there

To catch up the two in the barn

halter and loading up to  come to their new home here.

Mo is quite a large alpaca

Dark red brown with a chin woddle

On his lower left chin it hangs

He's so darn cute he's one you just want to cuddle.

When springtime comes and May arrives

    It's shearing time each year

Mo just stands gently in the chute

He's so good, there is no fear.

Then there is toenails to trim

    Being done without a fight

Then a bead of wormer into the mouth

The taste is made just right.

    Talk about a gentle soul

    He gets to do P.R.

    This is his forever home

To all he is a star.

Mo has been here several years now

He just gets to do  his thing

He goes where he wants and lays where he likes

We let him  just be a king.

No matter what his real age is

    We may never know

Mo has a favorite area in the barn

Summer, Spring, fall or out of winter snow.

Sisko

  • While Sisko is the most handsome lad of the bunch: he has severe behavior issues towards humans as he was imprinted on in his young life.

Llamas who have been imprinted on usually have long term mental issues and can be a challenge.
Safe Haven rescues neglected, abused, and unwanted llamas & alpacas, and Sisko falls into the abused category as well as the unwanted.

It may take his lifetime to teach him his limits on what is and isn’t okay behavioral wise.

He’s pushy, can be aggressive and wants to be in charge. But he also has an excellent personality and is a great guard when stray dogs, foxes, or any other animals come around that do not belong on the property.
His eyes will melt your heart: and then you have to snap out of it and remember what a turkey he can be.

  • Sisko's Story by Char

    Talk about a good-looking llama

He could have been a stud

    Some humans imprinted on him

So now he 's a dud.

    He is a throw-away llama

At several homes he has been

    Now an UNWANTED LLAMA

    That should have been dead.

    He was with pack llamas

    But just didn't fit in

    They bullied him terribly

And he was disliked by men.

After being hauled for miles on the highway

    With no place to go

He ended up at Safe Haven

    Char couldn't say "no".

As he stepped out of the trailer

He was a handsome sight to behold

No wonder he was imprinted on

    That handsome but dangerous soul.

By accident, he come to Safe Haven

With no place to call his forever home

But a decision had to be made

    Just where he could roam.

    Being an imprinted llama

    With somewhat called "abhorrent behavior"

We were told to euthanize (kill) him

    and not be a Savior.

Sisko was put in a pasture

with 2 alpacas, Gunner and Tog

    They always bully him

    And his food they hog.

    When there are no visitors

He gets to hang with the herd

    They just ignore him

    Not humming a word.

As with some of the others

    They hang out alone

Enjoying a spot in the pasture

    That is specifically their own.

    Sisko is not agressive

    But one still must beware

He sometimes will cluck at you

    With an unacceptable glare.

He has been given 4 more years of life

Using him as an educational tool

Teaching people that cute cuddly llamas and alpacas

Does not make them a jewel.

They can be very dangerous and hurt you

So if at a ranch or petting zoo

Be aware of this type of llama/alpaca

Cause it just "IS Not cool."

Humans are the problem. These animals need to be what they are. They should not be overly hugged and cuddled by a human the first month or two of their life. It is giving them a death sentence.

They need the life that is due them with the right kind of love, care and respect.

Sisko will live out the rest of his years here at the sanctuary. We can’t do it alone! If you feel led to donate please do!

Powder

  • Oh, our little Powder. She is almost a mini and was left by herself in open fields, lonely and sad. She was brought here as the previous owner was moving and could not keep her. For a few years now she has had some arthritis develop in her left front knee and shoulder. What a girl, stands still and lets Char wrap it for her. A few of her teeth are missing and she is showing her age but nothing stops her from keeping up with the herd. We love her and are so grateful she gets to spend the rest of her life with us!

  • Powder - By Char

    Our little Powder Puff

Has been with us for many years

    She was actually dumped here

The unknown brought her with fears.

    She and her companions

Had a large acreage they could roam

    They then passed away

For years she was left alone.

Char picked up the phone one day

    Powders owner made the call

Would Safe Haven take in Powder?

    She'd gladly make the haul.

Her place had sold, she had to move

Powder no longer had a home

When Char was gone one day

Powder was dumped, she was so alone.

    Here was this mini llama

    With heavy grey brown wool

She didn't know where she was

    This just was not cool.

    Char went in the pen

With a calm and gentle voice

    She comforted little Powder

It was just the right choice.

Powder was let out with the others

To be greeted by some of the herd

To figure out where she fit in

It took place without a word.

She is in her 20's now

There are special spots that are hers

Powder eats and sleeps with no worries

    Always listening with her ears.

All the years have taken its toll

    There's arthritis in a knee

She lets Char rub and wrap it

Then let her, again,  go free.

    Her front teeth are gone

The back ones can barely chew
We keep a close eye on her for choke

So her food can make it through

This little girls time left with us is short

As old age is taking it's tole

So glad she's here and I've been blessed

    Powder Puff, another precious soul..

Kiora

  • Kiroa is one of our alpaca residents who loves to play in the water. Kiora has struggled tremendously during the fire season and smoke makes her VERY ill. We almost lost her in early fall 2020. She's living her best life here at the sanctuary and is such a delight.

Isaiah

  • Isaiah arrived at Safe Haven in Fall of 2021.

He had very little interaction with humans before he came and was skittish around humans.

We talk to him and are slowly working with him and he now understands he is safe here.

We sometimes never know our residents backgrounds: so we always take time to let them get to know us.

  • Isaiah - By Char

Isaiah is just the cutest llama ever

    He's an almost mini boy

    A guy that's from inbreeding

But gives us such great joy.

Two ladies had him and his mom

But things in their life changed

Isaiah and his mom needed rehomed

With Safe Haven it was arranged.

    Char remembered these two llamas

From a former place in time

In the late 90's in a pasture

Not real cared for, it's a crime.

So we hooked up the trailer

Made the drive up the hill nearby

Isaiah and his mom were penned

IN an area that was dry.

I greeted the lady at the gate

Then made my way into the pen

Isaiah and his mom freaked out

    Their eyes looked as if
    on no,  not again."

The only times they have been handled

Was when a vet or shearer come

Then out to their pasture they would go

To their gulley they would run.

Char just spoke to them quietly'

With a calm and gentle voice

They didn't know her from Adam

But knew they had no choice.

    Into a corner they huddled

The halter was gently put on

One was caught and tied first

Momma , Lydia, then her son.

    We walked  to the trailer

    With the door opened wide

You could just see in their eyes

They wee afraid of the ride.

    Down the hill we drove

Headed to their Safe Haven home

    They'd meet many others

Out to a green pasture they'd roam.

    Two happy llamas they are

    For almost two years

    Momma Lydia then died

    Brought Isaiah to tears.

    It took a few months

    For most sadness to leave

But Isaiah is so happy here

With companions  he no longer grieves.

As the warm days are upon us

He lays belly-up in the heat

    Just so hilarious to watch

You make us laugh with your feet.

    When we have guests

Along with others he's in the pen

He's a part of something special

    Making a human friend.

Safe Haven is a forever home

    For his special soul

We love you soo much Isaiah

    More the you'll ever know.

There is no other here like you

    That can make our day

    You'll always make us laugh

We wouldn't have you any other way. z

Pascal

  • Pascal is one of the feral herd that came to the sanctuary Fall of 2023. He is a gentle chap. Older and more frail than most, but he's receiving the best care and medical attention. His fiber had never been sheared before arriving and he was SO happy when the weight of that was gone! He came to us a little on the thin side but is thriving with hay, pellets, and healthy pastures. It's a delight watching him learn that humans are safe. Schedule a visit and come meet this magnificent gentle lad.

Harmony

  • A sweet melody at Safe Haven. Harmony is a delicate soul who has been at Safe Haven for years. She enjoys Spring and eating  fresh grass in the West Pasture.

She has the personality of a Kardashian. She is quire the queen!

Autumn & Velvet

  • This mother-daughter duo came to us in 2020. Autumn (daughter/left is kind, curious, and MUST know what you humans are doing and has to be first to greet anyone arriving to visit.

Velvet (mom/right) is gentle and sweet with a more reserved personality. She came to us with some previous damage to her trachea and has a chronic skin disorder requiring treatment. To donate to Velvet's continuing medical care please Click Here.

  • Velvet - By Char

Velvet is simply adorable and cute

She is the mother of Miss Autumn

    They don't hang together much

This no one has taught them.

    With fiber of dark honey

And the age of 12 years old,

Five years she's been in Safe Haven

She had a cough but not a cold.

We've had her checked by our vet

    She's had cranial sacral  to

Nothing seems to help her cough

    There's nothing they can do.

Until she come into  Safe Haven

Velvet was always laid and stretched for shearing

Someones knee upon her neck  and throat

Most likely caused fear and tearing.

There has been other bodily issues

    For the past three years

With scabby legs and infected feet

    We finally have it clear.

Velvet really doesn't like messed with much

    Like humans want to do

But sometimes she will coosh with Autumn

    And visitors think its cool.

Of course what would it be

For an alpaca who is sweet

As she heads up to a bunk to eat

     Velvet loves her treat.

    When the summer heat arrives

We put out a kiddy pool of water

Its nice and cold for her to coosh in

As the summer time gets  hotter.

Then off to the green pastures

To nibble and lounge for the day

Then into the shade of the barn she goes

    Til evening she will stay.

Soon the fall and winter weather arrives

Her gorgeous fiber will keep her warm

She loves to be in the bedded barn

Clean straw, no wind, no harm.

  • AUTUMN - By Char

    Sweet lil Autumn

    Possibly born in the fall

    She so sweet and cuddly

    Just like a doll.

    Her gorgeous huacaya fiber

    is a dark reddish brown

    It puffs on her body

so it makes her look round.

    When Autumn gets hot

During the heat of the day

    She heads for a pool

    And in it she'll lay.

    Autumn loves visitors

    She greets them for pets

    Then cameras com out

    Photographs are the best.

When its time to come in

To get her snack for the day

She picks the bunk she likes

    And there she'll stay.

    Crunching and munching

Then out to the pasture she goes

    Headed for the green grass

    to tickle her toes.

Another happpy day at Safe Haven

    for her and her mom

    A FOREVER HOME

Where they can always be calm.
